Keynote Presentation: Australian Coal Supply and Japanese Coal Demand Outlook

Commodity Insights were thrilled to be a keynote presenter at the Australia Japan Coal Conference 2023. This landmark event marked the return of the conference since its last edition in 2018, making it the 35th edition of this prestigious gathering.

It was a privilege to have our Founder and Director as a keynote speaker in the session titled Australian Coal Supply and Japanese Coal Demand Outlook, where Mark Gresswell provided invaluable insights into the future of coal trade between Australia and Japan.

Mark emphasised the critical factors that underpin Australia’s role as a dependable long-term coal supplier to Japan. These factors include Australia’s exceptional coal quality, relative supply stability, and, most importantly, the enduring bonds between our two nations.

Australia-Japan coal dependence

The conference was chaired by two distinguished industry leaders – Earl Melamed, Head of Global Coal Assets at Glencore, representing Australia, and Kazumitsu Takanishi, Executive Vice President of The Kansai Electric Power Co. Inc., representing Japan. Their welcome remarks set the stage for an eventful conference.

With a lineup of eight keynote speakers, each delivering thought-provoking insights, the conference explored various facets of the Australia-Japan coal relationship. The sessions ranged from Supply and Demand Outlook to Australian State Developments and Technology Developments. The event showcased the strength and depth of our partnership with Japan.

At Commodity Insights, we are dedicated to facilitating informed discussions and sharing valuable insights that drive the energy and steel industry sectors forward. We extend our gratitude to the Mineral Council of Australia for the opportunity to speak and we thank all those who attended and contributed to the success of this conference.
